While whitewall tires are uncommon today, if you’ve restored that old ‘55 Ford Thunderbird or ‘65 Chevy Corvette, you want to show off nice, clean whitewall tires. Sad to say, many people overlook this crucial part of tire maintenance.

It goes without saying that side walls get dirty from mud, dust and other roadside debris. However, most people don’t realize ultraviolet rays are also to blame. These rays will not only make the whitewall turn yellow, but in the worst cases, they can cause minor cracks to the tire.

To start cleaning your tires, wet the tires down and apply a good amount of cleaner. Scrub the entire surface. When you finish scrubbing, rinse well and let them thoroughly dry.

Once dry, you can now focus your attention on the whitewall itself. There are several whitewall cleaners available. If you choose not to purchase one, use a household cleaner free from harsh chemicals such as alcohol or chlorine. These cleaners will get the whitewall clean but will degrade the tire over time.

We've come up with a solution that contains products you probably have in your house - vinegar and baking soda. Make a paste of these two ingredients and generously apply it to the white surface. Let it sit on the tire for a bit before scrubbing it with a brush, scrub pad or SOS pad. If you don’t have these ingredients readily available, you can use a whitewall tire cleaning product such as an eraser cleaning pad or Simple Green whitewall tire cleaner.

The final step in the cleaning process is to apply a tire protectant. Tire protectant is critical in the cleaning process. Although some people think they lead to browning, this couldn't be further from the truth. To prevent browning over time, thoroughly clean the old protectant off before putting a new coat on.

Protectants will lubricate the rubber to add extra protection. If you store your car for prolonged periods, protectants will help safeguard against tire degradation such as dry rot. You just need to be sure to apply the product correctly.

Be sure when buying one you choose one with a built-in UV protectant. Your tires will not only shine, but the protectant will also help repel brake dust, dirty water, snow, and other road grime.

Whitewall tires can be a classic or sporty look from the past. By regularly cleaning whitewall tires, you will keep your tires looking new and fresh. Further, remember to protect them regularly.
